Takata Corp., a major auto parts supplier, is the focus of a 7.8 million-vehicle recall by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) centering on faulty airbags that may violently rupture in a crash.

Four deaths and more than 100 injuries have already been linked to the defective airbags, and the NHTSA is warning consumers to take action immediately. The airbags have the potential to spray shards of metal and other debris on impact, which can maim, disfigure, or kill vehicle occupants.

If you or someone you love has been injured by a faulty Takata airbag, consult Anderson, Cummings & Drawhorn to see if you are eligible for compensation.

Timeline Of Events

As more details come to light regarding the recall, reports reveal that Takata Corp. may have known more about the risks of its airbags than first believed.

In 2004, an airbag exploded in a Honda Accord during a crash and injured the driver and the New York Times reported that Takata called the incident an anomaly. In 2009, another incident involving an Accord killed a driver in a similar fashion. The driver reportedly had shrapnel in her neck and chest.

…more than 10 million vehicles have been recalled since 2008 for the problem…

At least three more ruptures were reported to Honda in 2007 according to regulatory filings and court records, but these incidents were settled confidentially with victims.

In 2008, Honda finally issued a recall for a small number of the vehicles that they believed were equipped with the defective airbags. Three years later, Honda confidentially submitted a death and injury tally to regulators.

In Nov. 2009, the NHTSA launched an investigation into Hondas airbag problems, but closed the inquiry six months later saying there was insufficient information to suggest the company failed to take timely action. The NHTSA has revived this inquiry and is now requiring Takata to submit documents and sworn testimony regarding these events. The deadline for Takata’s response to the NHTSA’s inquiry is Dec. 1.
