Metal on metal hip replacements have become one of the most widely used types of hip replacements for those who want to increase their ability, alleviate chronic pain and get their lives back to normal.
These types of hip replacement systems were created to decrease the risk of device failure and dislocation, and for less wear and tear when compared to other types of hip replacements.
Unfortunately, over time more and more people began to experience negative side effects linked to metal on metal hip replacements. In some cases, victims needed additional surgeries to replace the metal on metal implants while others suffered fatal illnesses.

Side-Effects of Metal on Metal Hip Implants
In 2008, voluntary recalls were announced as some patients had began experiencing serious side effects. Two years later, the first lawsuit against metal on metal hip replacement manufacturer Johnson & Johnson was filed. The lawsuit alleged that the DePuy ASR hip replacement system was defective. Months later, the company would recall these hip replacement systems.
Some side effects associated with these types of hip implants include:
- Difficulty walking
- Bone fractures
- Swelling
- Renal impairment
- Cardiomyopathy
- Hypersensitivity reactions, such as hives or a skin rash
Metal toxicity, or metallosis, was also a common and life-threatening side effect. Metallosis occurs when there is a buildup of metallic debris in the soft tissue of the body. Metal debris from the implant can cause grey discoloration of the tissue surrounding the implant, which can indicate that the tissue is oxygen starved and dying.
Metallosis can lead to severe joint pain, implant failure and deterioration of the bone around the implant.
