Two semi-trucks and 13 passenger vehicles were involved in an accident in Melissa, Texas, early Friday morning. The Dallas auto accident occurred on U.S. Highway 75.
Initially, news reports suggested that as many as 40 vehicles could have been involved in the collision. This number was reduced about two hours after the accident was first reported.
Dallas police investigators stated that one or two vehicles were involved in an initial accident between Melissa and Throckmorton roads. Other drivers, swerving to avoid the initial accident, ended up sliding off the road into the ditch. Rather than one large pileup, most of the drivers avoided hitting any other cars and merely skidded off the road.
At least two people were hospitalized with minor injuries, and no deaths were reported.
Snow and ice have plagued north Texas roads for the past several days, and roads are expected to be in poor condition for at least a few days more. As of 7 p.m. on Friday, the Fort Worth Police Department had reported 160 minor accidents, 57 major accidents, and filed 25 hit-and-run reports. In addition to these accidents, multiple semi-trucks were having difficulty navigating the roads and became stuck for several hours.
The attorneys at Anderson, Cummings & Drawhorn are reminding drivers to use extra care when the weather turns dangerous. Try to avoid driving if at all possible when the roads are bad, and drive slowly through un-plowed or slick roads. Leave plenty of space between you and other drivers so that you can decelerate without rapidly hitting the brakes.
Be aware of other drivers on the road, and always expect the unexpected. No matter how carefully you may drive this winter, other drivers may not be as cautious. If someones reckless or negligent driving caused your accident, you may be able to recover compensation for your injuries. At Anderson, Cummings & Drawhorn, our personal injury attorneys have the experience you need on your side to hold dangerous drivers responsible for their actions.
