Two children were killed while another is in critical condition following a four-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 380 in Denton on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2016.
According to Denton police, a Nissan minivan stopped for a red light in the westbound lanes of U.S. 380 at Mayhill Road was rear-ended by the driver of a Ford F-350. According to police, the truck driver was traveling at a high rate of speed, which caused the minivan to enter the intersection and strike a passenger car and pickup truck.
An 11-year-old girl riding in the minivan was killed in the crash. Her 8-year-old brother and 4-year-old brother were taken to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas after suffering life-threatening injuries. Overnight on Saturday, the 8-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries. The 4-year-old boy remains in critical condition.
The man and the woman in the front seats of the minivan and the driver of the pickup truck were all treated for minor injuries.
According to a police investigation, all four children in the accident were not secured in the vehicle. A police spokesperson also noted that the intersection is problematic and many fatal accidents were reported for years before a light was added to the intersection. Still, if someone on the highway runs the light, or is distracted, they will hit someone at a high rate of speed.
So far, no criminal charges have been filed.
Children in auto accidents face a higher risk of injury. According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2013, nearly 700 children under the age of 12 were fatally injured in motor vehicle accidents.
